Teen Program: Ghost Hunting with Eastern Washington Paranormal!

Posted by heather in Events

Are Ghosts Real?

Do They Talk to Us?

This Thursday, July 12th, between 3 and 5pm, teens (and adults, too!) can come find out more about the supernatural and the science of modern ghost hunting with our local paranormal investigation group, Eastern Washington Paranormal.

About EWP:

We are a group of people who volunteer our time and resources, to help people find answers to the paranormal activity experienced in their homes, businesses, and other property.  We do not claim to be able to remove or communicate with any phenomena you may be experiencing, rather our goal is to look for logical explanations first, and document any phenomena that may be occurring at the location second.

We are a scientific minded group, and we hold professionalism and respect in the highest regard.  Our job is to present any evidence as we find it to the client, including any possible natural or man-made explanations for the activity they have experienced.

eReader Device Show and Tell

Posted by heather in Events

The Columbia County Rural Library District is sponsoring a “Show and Tell” for eReader Devices.  Thanks to the Washington State Library, who received a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, an eReader lab is being sent to various libraries around the state.  The Washington State Library purchased a Kindle, Nook, iPad, and iPhone.  The eReader lab is coming to the Columbia County Rural Library District in January.

Anyone interested in purchasing an eReader device, wants to learn how to use one, or wants to bring his/her own device to learn how to download an eBook is welcome to attend one of the free “Show and Tell” sessions.  Staff will be available to help people download an eBook.  The Columbia County Rural Library District now offers eBooks through their Web site,, which can be downloaded for free to a Kindle, Nook, Ipad, Iphone, PC, and some other devices.  Downloading an eBook to the Washington State Library’s devices will not be allowed.  Those devices from the State Library are just for viewing and seeing how they operate.  A few books have already been downloaded to the State Library’s devices.

Come and see what these devices look like or bring you own device and learn how to download an eBook.  Dates for the “Show and Tell” are:

  • January 17th 10 to 11 a.m.
  • January 18th 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
  • January 19th 11 to noon

Direct any questions to the staff at the Dayton Memorial Library 382-4131 or email

If you missed last week's "Lego-Rama!":

We had three participants in the 4-8 age group, six participants in the 9-12 age group, and three adult participants.  The People’s Choice prize went to Keegan Haag, age 7, for his Lego project called “Head factory.”

A few Lego projects will be on display at the library for one week.

Fun was had by all and refreshments followed the judging.  And if you enjoyed "Lego-Rama!," you're in luck: there will be a Lego event on the first Friday of each month beginning January 6th, 2012! The Lego event would be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Thank you to our judges:  Donna Helsius, Aimee Rosenberg, Dale Slack, and Bonnie Williams.

From Storytime to Classes, October is a busy month!

Posted by heather in Events

It's Autumn again, and as life winds down from harvest and summer activities, the library picks up the slack with a LOT of new programs!

Starting October 3rd, your preschool age children (3 to 6) can come to the library Monday afternoons (2:30 to 3:15pm) to enjoy a story read by our director, Janet Lyon.

Then beginning October 11th, we'll have storytimes for Babies (11:30 to 11:45am) and Toddlers (11:00 to 11:30am) every Tuesday.

Also beginning Tuesday mornings (and going through April) are our Basic Adult Computer Classes from 10 to 11am. The month of October will be spent covering beginning things like using a mouse and keyboard, as well as navigating through Microsoft Word. November will start with Microsoft Excel, December will cover Microsoft Publisher, January: the Internet -- including email and Library websites/databases. Some of these topics will repeat, so if you miss them this fall, you can possibly catch them later in the winter or early spring. (To pick up a full schedule, please visit us here at the library.)

Starting on Wednesday, October 5th, at 6:30pm we'll have a weekly, month-long class on social networking with Facebook and Twitter (for intermediate computer users).

And remember the Friends of the Library booksale on October 8th! :)

For more information, please call the library (382-4131) or check out our full calendar of events.
