Count Down to the New Year

Baby, it's cold outside...Drop into the library any time for a fun activity every day, M-F in December.

12/1 & 2 - Write a letter to Santa and the library elves will mail it for you!

12/3 - Warm up with some delicious apple cider!

12/4 - Make a Holiday card for someone special!

12/5- Make a unique ornament!

12/8- Take a silly holiday photo

12/9- Show Santa what a good girl or boy you' ve been this year and draw him a picture

12/10- Make an Olaf sock doll

12/11- Make a reindeer candycane

Storytime Tuesdays, beginning September 16th

Beginning September 16th, join us at the library for Storytime Tuesdays!

Baby & Toddler Storytime at 10am: Books, songs, rhymes, fingerplays, stories, and activities that promote development and learning.

Preschool at 10:45am: Books, rhymes, songs, activities and crafts that promote early literacy and love of reading.

Storytime is a free service of the Columbia County Rural Library District. No library card is needed!

Summer Reading 2014 has Begun!

Our annual Summer Reading program has officially begun!

The theme this year for pre-K through 6th grade is "Fizz, Boom, Read!" and the theme for 6th grade through 12th grade is "Spark a Reaction." Sign-ups are ongoing -- participants can pick up a packet of activities and a schedule of science-themed programs, and claim their free book!

If all Summer Reading participants can read a combined 1000 hours (verified by parent/guardian), Miss Amy has vowed to dye her hair the winning color as selected by poll (GREEN!).

This week the program kicks off with magician Louis Foxx on Wednesday, June 25th at 5:30pm in the Delany Room!

World Book Night

Want to be a World Book Night book giver on April 23, 2014, in support of literacy and community? It’s Shakespeare’s birthday and 25,000 volunteers will go out on one day and give a half million specially printed paperbacks to light or non-readers across America. Apply to be a book giver by January 5, 2014 by going to, read up on the guidelines and list of books, and then apply!

Select the Columbia County Rural Library District as your pickup site.

On the night of the event, book givers can pick up their books at the library and we'll have refreshments available.

Friends' 2nd Annual Cookie Walk & Other Holiday Info

The Friends of the Library will be hosting their 2nd Annual Cookie Walk, "Cookies on Parade," in the Delany Room on Friday, November 29th from 1 to 4pm. Come buy cookies and goodies for your holiday needs and help support the Friends!


There will be NO STORYTIME on the 29th, as the Library will be closed for Thanksgiving Day (the 28th) and the day after (the 29th).

The Library will resume normal hours on Saturday, November 30th.

Kicking Off the Summer Reading Program!

It's almost time for our annual Summer Reading program! Sign-ups begin on June 11th, but we're kicking things off early with a special performance by the Walla Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival musicians this Friday at 3:30pm.

The Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival musicians will be presenting a performance called "Harp," of Beethoven's String Quartet in E-flat, op. 74. The nickname 'harp' comes from the way the musicians pluck the strings during the first movement.

Refreshments to follow the performance.

2013 Teen Video Challenge: Beneath the Surface

The Washington State Library has announced CSLP (Collaborative Summer Library Programming)'s national video challenge for the 2013 Teen Summer Reading Program, "Beneath the Surface."

Teens ages 13 to 18 are invited to create a 30 to 90 second video with their interpretation of the slogan, "Beneath the Surface," in relation to libraries and reading. The creators of the winning video could win $275 for themselves, plus $125 for their local library. The submission deadline is February 23rd, 2013.

Holiday Happenings

Lots of things going on this week, folks!

The Library will be closed both Thursday AND Friday (November 22nd and 23rd) for the Thanksgiving Holiday.

The Friends of the Library will be hosting their "Cookies on Parade: Cookie Walk" sale on Friday, November 23rd from 1 to 3:30pm in the Delany Room. You can swing by and pick up some homemade Christmas cookies and candy for $6 per pound. All monies go to the Friends of the Dayton Library.

The Library will have normal open hours on Saturday, November 24th (10am to 2pm).

Have a happy -- and safe, if you're traveling -- holiday!
