Laptops for the Library!

Posted by heather in Library News

So you head into the library to check your email; it's a short errand and will only take you five minutes...

...But as you walk in the door you see that all the patron-use stations are full.

What do you do? It would just be a short email check, and the clerk at the counter tells you it would be ten minutes before the next computer is available...

We know wait lists for our patron Internet computers have been increasing. And at last, we have a solution!

The Library is proud to offer four Internet-access laptops for use by patrons! These new, Windows 8 machines are Internet-ready will check out for one hour to help offset those waitlist lag times.

Requirements are:

  • An account in good standing, defined as no fines, fees, or overdues on the account.
  • Patron must be over 18, and have a valid driver's license or state-issued ID.
  • Computers must be used within the library, and be returned to the Front Desk when the checkout period is up.
  • More in our Laptop Policy

Please inquire at the front desk!

Teen Video Contest Underway!

Posted by heather in Announcements

This just in from the Washington State Library:

Know any teenagers who love making videos? Do you have a son or daughter who aspires to be the next Steven Spielberg or Kathryn Bigelow? There’s a contest happening right now that’s perfect for them.
It’s the 2014 Teen Video Challenge, a national video competition for teens to get involved with reading and their public library’s summer reading program.
Here’s how it works: Contestants create a video 30 to 90 seconds long that encourages teens to read and use libraries this summer. Entrants need to include their interpretation of this year’s contest slogan, “Spark a Reaction.”
Go here http://www.sos.wa.gov/library/libraries/projects/summerreading/videochallenge.aspx to learn more about the state contest, download a contest entry form, learn what to include in a video, where to upload the completed video and how to send in a completed entry form. Contestants need to send in their completed forms by March 7. Any Washington teen or group of teens ages 13-18 may enter.
The contest is being held by the Collaborative Summer Library Program. The Washington State Library is a partner in the annual contest.
One individual or group will be selected as Washington’s Teen Video Challenge winner and receive a $275 award. The library listed on the entry form will receive from CSLP and a $25 gift certificate for Upstart products. The winner(s) will be notified in April.
In addition, the Washington video winner and all notable Teen Video Challenge entries from our state will be available on the Washington Summer Reading Program page.
The Washington State Library is a division of the Office of Secretary of State.

The Oldest Books in Our Library

Posted by heather in Interesting Tidbits

While doing research in our newspaper archive other day, I had a patron ask me what the oldest book in our library was.

I did a little sleuthing and this is what I came up with:

Two books, Pen Pictures from the Garden of the World: History of Oregon, Illustrated and History of Washington Volume 1, both with print dates in 1893.

The Pen Pictures book has a lovely, embossed leather cover.

Unfortunately, we don't know much about these two books, other than they are very old. Both have complete page counts, and are an interesting look into the history of the Pacific Northwest.

If you are interested in taking a gander at these old tomes, please inquire about the Genealogy Reference section at the front desk. :-)
